The government has broken its promise to local authorities to do ‘whatever it takes’ to fund the cost of the coronavirus crisis. This – coupled with cuts to public health budgets – has meant that Calderdale Council is now struggling to meet the cost of retaining a school crossing patrol across the whole of the borough.

Please sign my petition below which calls on the government to provide the necessary support to keep the school crossing patrol going.

Petition: Funding for Calderdale’s School Crossing Patrol

To the House of Commons.

The petition of the residents of the United Kingdom,

Declares that Calderdale Council is working with its local school crossing patrol to review the future of the service and its contribution to supporting safe and active travel to school in the long-term; further declares that cuts to school funding and public health grants have brought into question the financial viability of the continuation of the service; and further declares that the pandemic has caused local councils to lose revenue through reduced business rates income and reduced council tax income.

The petitioners therefore request that the House of Commons urge the Government to support Calderdale Council to continue its school crossing patrol and ensure that local councils more widely can continue their fundamental work and valued services.

And the petitioners remain, etc.
