A local journalism student has released a short film showing the impact of the Boxing Day floods and the hard work of Holly and local volunteers in dealing with the aftermath.

Last year Calvin Robinson, a Halifax film student studying at the University of Lincoln, decided that he wanted to produce a film as part of his university degree looking at how political decisions taken in Westminster effect people’s lives in Calderdale.

He approached Holly who agreed to take part in the project allowing Calvin and his team to film in Westminster and to join her in her constituency.

However just as Calvin was to begin filming Calderdale was hit by the worst floods in living memory and he decided that he wanted to tell the story of the floods and how they affected his local area.

His film, called Fighting the Floods, was released this week. It explores how Holly tackled the issue of flooding in Westminster, raising the issue in debates and working to ensure that the government response delivered for the area.

It also features Rev Angela Dick and Peter Henry of Christ Church in Sowerby Bridge who describe how their church became a hub for community volunteers and support. It received a special screening at Christ Church this week

Holly has praised Calvin on the film. She said:

“Calvin asked me to take part in his film about the Boxing Day floods. He has just released his short but powerful film and it’s great to see the result of his hard work over the last few months.

“He really captures the sense of devastation after the floods, but also the hope and community spirit that got us through the worst.

“Well done Calvin -; I’m sure you have a bright future ahead of you in journalism.”
