Holly Lynch MP From Halifax, For Halifax
This morning Holly again asked the Government why they had decided to introduce a lower minimum wage for those under 25 (see above). The Leader of the House Chris Grayling responded to her question and reiterated the Government’s argument that low wages for the young should help youth unemployment.
Earlier this month, the Government introduced the Living Wage to boost pay for those on low incomes with a rate starting at of £7.20 per hour rising to £9 by 2020. However those aged 21- to 24 face a lower hourly wage of £6.70 and those under aged 18-20 a rate of £5.30.
This will mean that around 10,000 young people in Calderdale face being paid less than their older co-workers, regardless of how hard they work.
