Petition against Waste Incinerators in Sowerby Bridge

Holly and Sowerby Bridge Labour councillors are working to stop the proposed waste incinerators in the town.

The plans have been submitted to Calderdale Council by Calder Valley Skip Hire for incinerators at Mearclough Road and Belmont Recycling Centre. The Belmont application will be heard by the Planning Committee on 19th December at 6pm at Halifax Town Hall, which the public can attend.

The below petition calls on the Secretary of State to take all possible measures to oppose these plans. It is aimed at Central Government as they set the regulations which determine these applications and, if the case ends up at appeal, it will be decided by a Government planning officer.

Holly said:

"This application is totally unsuitable for Sowerby Bridge. With the local geography of steep sided valleys, the air pollution resulting from these incinerators would be unacceptable, especially with the local schools nearby."

To the House of Commons,

The petition of residents of Sowerby Bridge,

Declares that Calder Valley Skip Hire Ltd have submitted an application for an Environmental Permit for an incinerator at their site at Mearclough Road; further to planning applications for another incinerator at their Belmont site at the other end of Sowerby Bridge; further resulting in increased levels of air pollution affecting a number of schools in the local area; further to causing more pollution in Air Quality Management Areas; further that traffic congestion would worsen as lorries bring waste to the site; and further to the site having recently flooded any future development could result in waste entering the river.

The petitioners therefore request that the House of Commons urges the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government to take all possible measures to prevent these waste incinerators being placed in the Sowerby Bridge area.

And the petitioners remain, etc.
