This year’s Fairtrade Fortnight falls between 22nd February and 7th March.

Unfortunately due to the pandemic we have not been able to plan one of our normal town centre events to mark the occasion, but the Halifax Fairtrade steering group – which I Chair – has come up with some fantastic teaching resources to help schools to teach pupils about Fairtrade and ethical trading.

We do hope that our local schools will make use of these and help to highlight that Halifax is a Fairtrade Town – something we can all be proud of!

We have a created a 15 minute video which can be shown to pupils which features me, Holly Lynch MP, and some of the other Fairtrade Halifax members. It contains footage of Fairtrade producers in the developing world, and reference to Halifax being a Fairtrade Town. DOWNLOAD VIDEO

The Fairtrade Foundation have also produced a whole range of teaching resources for early years, primary schools and secondary schools.

Their Home Learning grid on the theme of ‘Climate, Fairtrade and You’ provides eight interdisciplinary learning activities that can be completed at home or in the classroom. Choose from designing delicious menus, planting fruit trees, exploring world maps and more! The activities are a great way to consolidate learning during Fairtrade Fortnight 2021. The 1-page PDF grid can be uploaded to Google Classroom or Microsoft Teams for children to access at home.

The Fairtrade Foundation are also asking children and young people to share their vision of the world they want by submiting their own artwork, poems or videos on the theme of ‘What does the world you want to see look like?’. Why not get your school involved? More details here.

We are always keen to hear from schools who teach about Fairtrade, so if you do use the resources we would love to hear any feedback.
