Holly is passionate about ethical trading and is an ambassador for Fairtrade.

Fairtrade is about better prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability, and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in the developing world. By requiring companies to pay sustainable prices (which must never fall lower than the market price), Fairtrade addresses the injustices of conventional trade, which traditionally discriminates against the poorest, weakest producers. It enables them to improve their position and have more control over their lives.

Holly is Co-Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group for Fairtrade in Parliament. When first elected in 2015, also Holly set up a Fairtrade steering group for Halifax, which she still chairs to this day.

The steering group has successfully promoted fair trade in the town and organised a number of events such as coffee mornings, presentations from Fairtrade producers, sampling sessions and the now annual Fairtrade School’s Conference at Halifax Minster, which brings together primary schools from across the constituency.

Halifax was awarded the prestigious ‘Fairtrade Town’ status in Summer 2017, thanks to the hard work of the steering group, and support from local businesses, the council, schools, and community and faith groups. In 2018 this was successfully renewed.

The steering group still meets regularly and is constantly looking at further ways to promote ethical trading. If you are interested in joining the group do get in touch.
